Aged 56, it took an hour to climb the 230-meter (755-foot) Heron Tower in the city's financial district.

The police prevented the crowds from coming back while he was climbing the stairs, using only chalk and muscle to get to the top.

"I'm not crazy," he told Sky News before the climb. "What I'm doing may seem crazy, but I'm not that crazy."

A hobby that began at the age of 11 has led Robert to browse more than 150 skyscrapers around the world, including Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House.

He often climbs without permission and has been arrested several times, sometimes for violation of property.

The police were waiting for Robert when he reached the top of Heron tower. A spokeswoman for the London City Police refused to say he had been charged.
