NBC News confirmed Thursday that President Donald Trump should send 800 soldiers to secure the US border at the approach of a migrant caravan.

The troops will likely be on active service, but no final determination has yet been made, nor the exact number that will be deployed, said a US official at NBC News. They should be in place by the end of the month.

The news was first reported by CNN, based on several officials of the administration, and confirmed by the Associated press.

Earlier Thursday, Trump had tweeted that he was "pulling out the army" to prevent people from crossing the southern border into the United States. The president described the border situation as a "national emergency".

CNN announced that an order authorizing the deployment could be signed as early as Thursday.

The move comes 12 days before the mid-term elections on Nov. 6, and Trump Trump has stepped up his speeches on immigration at several campaign rallies each week. The president said that immigration and border security are one of the most important points of the campaign.

The troops will not be in riot gear, but will provide logistical support to customs and border protection officials, the official said. About 2,100 members of the National Guard are currently working along the border to help border authorities.

On Wednesday, the caravan of more than 7,000 people was in Huixtla, Mexico, more than 1,000 miles from the US border.

"Wait to see what we will do with the border (in the next) weeks," Trump said Wednesday night at a campaign rally in Wisconsin. "Start the wall, have an extra $ 1.6 billion, you want to build it, wait to see what happens … You're going to see a very safe border, the military is ready, they're all ready."

The president's tweet Thursday morning was referring to comments by Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, about "Fox and Friends". Judd, a frequent guest at Fox News Channel, represents approximately 16,000 Border Patrol Officers.

"Brandon Judd of the National Border Patrol Council is right when he tells @foxandfriends that the laws inspired by the Democrats make it difficult to stop people at the border," tweeted Trump.

Trump added: "MUST BE ORDERED, but I will bring the military for this national emergency and they will be arrested!" he added, seeming to misspell "changed".

Trump has tweeted several times in recent days about illegal immigration and the caravan of migrants heading north across Mexico.

He said Wednesday night at a rally in Wisconsin that the United States would have a "very safe border" and that "the military is ready" to help secure it.

And Monday, Trump had tweeted, without proof, that "criminals and strangers from the Middle East are mixed" in the caravan and that he "alerted the border guards and the military to the fact that" it was a national emergency. Trump later admitted that he had "no evidence" to support his claim.
