The man arrested by police following an incident at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital was released, according to Lake Charles Police Assistant Chief Mark Kraus. We spoke with Edgar Sanchez who said that he was the person briefly detained.
Sanchez said that he went to the gift shop to buy a bear for his 10-year-old daughter, who was to be released from the hospital at 10 am. to pay, but they refused to sell him anything. He said that he then went back to the room to wait for his daughter to be released.
About half an hour later, he stated that the SWAT team had come in and had ordered him out of the room with his hands up in the air. his child crying when they took him into custody.
"I feel so angry. I feel like they are very racist with me, "says Sanchez. He said that he had never had a weapon, only a bottle of Coca-Cola under his blanket.
The police first stated that the detainee would have had a gun in one of the rooms and that several people were in the room with him. They say that the man came out of the room and stopped him without injuries. Later, the police reported that no weapons had been found. The hospital would then be reopened for normal operations.
The SWAT team at the sheriff's office in the parish of Calcasieu participated in evacuations and security efforts.
All schools in the area have been segregated as a precautionary measure. The area has since been deemed secure and all locks lifted by both the Lake Charles Police and the Sheriff's Office.
