LOS ANGELES • That the Cardinals' second baseman, Kolten Wong, can grab the first Gold Glove Award he covets is the changing and slippery nature of the clean-up defense assessment.
Wong, who emerged last season as an elite defensive player, was named Thursday as one of the top three winners of the vote for the National League gold glove at his post, jockey for the final honor with Colorado D.J. LaMahieu and Cubs Javier Baez. The Cardinals spent time last week talking to potential candidates for the coaching position while waiting for AAA Director Stubby Clapp to be nominated for Major League vacancies. Clapp has had at least a phone interview with the Texas Rangers, a source confirmed, and the Rangers still need a manager. Toronto, long considered a possible venue for Clapp, hired Charlie Montoyo, Tampa Bay coach, as manager. Cardinals are optimistic that Clapp will be their first base coach / coach in 2019 and could finalize their staff in the first week of November.
