Police in Banan District, Chongqing City, said the children had been forcibly degraded as they returned to class after their morning exercises at the Yudong New Century Kindergarten around 9:30 am local time.

Security guards and school staff managed to control the 39-year-old aggressor. The video of the scene seemed to show angry spectators hitting and hitting the woman after she was arrested.

An unknown number of students have been taken to the hospital after the incident, according to the statement, while the attacker was arrested.

Xia Yang, a resident of Chongqing, told CNN that many crowds had gathered at the scene after the incident and that videos of injured children were circulating on Chinese social media. Police said the investigations were continuing.

The incident of Friday is not the first time in China that children are handling knives in school. Nine students were killed in a college in Shaanxi Province in April by a 28-year-old man who was later sentenced to death.

According to Xinhua state media, the murderer wanted to "take revenge on his former classmates who had teased him" and had bought the knives online.

In 2017, 11 students were injured after a man climbed the wall of a children's garden with a knife and began to attack them.
