The singer says "proud to have become a Muslim"

Irish singer Sinéad O 'Connor announced that she had converted to Islam.

The artist, who is best known for her hit version of the song Nothing Compares 2 U from 1990, said that she had changed her name to become Shuhada.

In a message on Twitter, she thanked other Muslims for their support.

She said that her decision was "the natural conclusion of the journey of any intelligent theologian" and has uploaded a video of herself singing adhan, or Islamic call to prayer.

On Thursday, Dr. Umar al-Qadri, Irish Imam Shaykh, published a video of the singer pronouncing the Islamic Declaration of Faith.

This is not the first time that O & # 39; Connor, who legally changed his name to Magda Davitt last year, spoke publicly about religion.

In 1992, it sparked controversy after tearing a photo of the pope live on American television.

Seven years later, she was ordained by a dissident church in Lourdes. The Catholic Church, which forbids women to become priests, did not recognize the ceremony.
