A A 45-year-old man was arrested for attempting to steal the Magna Carta in Salisbury Cathedral.

The alarms of Wiltshire Cathedral were triggered when a man broke the glass box surrounding the original 1215 document.

It is understood that the man was a visitor who used a hammer to try to break the protective case in order to get hold of the historical act.

One witness stated that she was walking past the cathedral when the alarm went off, which resulted in an evacuation. Seconds later, she saw a man being apprehended.

She told the Salisbury Journal: "It looked like men fighting, but when they walked through the doors, I saw a hammer fall to the ground and one of the men was thrown on the road while another man was holding him.

"They then held their hands behind their backs while they took the hammer."

A spokeswoman for the force said The telegraph: "A 45-year-old man is in custody this morning suspected of attempted theft of the Magna Carta.

"Just before 5 pm yesterday, alarms were triggered at Salisbury Cathedral after an attempt was made to break the glass box surrounding the Magna Carta, the staff was alerted and the police were called.

"A man corresponding to the description given by the witnesses was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery, possession of an offensive weapon and criminal damage, and was taken into custody by Melksham for questioning.
