Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan in Tongan Costume Farewell to the Pacific Islands

SYDNEY, Oct. 26 (Reuters) – Meghan Markle's trendy clothing trend is generally encouraging favorite stylists to shop, but her latest choice – traditional Tongan couture – might prove a little harder to find.

Meghan, 37, who became the Duchess of Sussex when she married the British Prince Harry in May, donned garlands of red flowers and a handmade wrap skirt called your ovala, given as a Friday traditional respect sign, while she and Harry also dressed in traditional attire, visited the Tongan nation in the South Pacific.

"I think our heart has just exploded! The #DukeandDuchessOfSussex in national costume inspecting traditional handicrafts," wrote Sulia Makasini, a Twitter user, in her newsfeed.

"What a historic moment for #Tonga."

The red and white skirts, which both wore over their normal clothes, spelled "TONGA" in bloom at the waist and won over the excited crowds of the archipelago nation and further afield.

"They are Tongan now, they love our culture," wrote Auburn Palu, another Twitter user from Auckland.

The country, which has 170 tropical islands with reefs and 108,000 inhabitants, is a former British colony.

The royal couple met with Tongan Prime Minister Akilisi Pōhiva in a government-funded but baptized St George Building in the capital, Nuku & alofa.

On his way home, Harry stopped to kiss a little boy holding a sign saying "Free hugs!"

The two men, who are expecting their child in the spring, were serenaded by students from Tupou College and stopped at the Royal Palace. They were celebrated everywhere by an excited crowd waving flags and placards celebrating the visit.

They laughed when boys from the college sang about mosquitoes, complete with dance moves, at a ceremony to dedicate two forest reserves on the campus, where they also inspected a caged black parrot.

School children later lined the route to the airport where the couple walked over a carpet of woven mats to their plane which left for Australia in the afternoon.

Earlier on their tour, the couple visited Fiji, where enormous crowds showed up to welcome them, and Australia where the public thronged the Sydney Opera House to catch a glimpse of Queen Elizabeth's grandson and his wife.

Meghan last week wore a white cocktail dress by Australian designer Karen Gee prompting such a rush of interest that the designer's website crashed several times.

They return to Australia before visiting New Zealand.
