Tyrone Gayle, press secretary for Senator Kamala Harris in Washington and veteran of the Democratic campaigns, died Thursday in Manhattan. He was 30 years old.
His death at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center was caused by colon cancer, according to Lily Adams, director of communications for Senator Harris.
Despite his youth, Mr. Gayle had worked for several great Democrats, since he was a chauffeur and body man for Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia in 2012 and spokesperson for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in 2016.
Along the way, he left lasting impressions, said his friends and colleagues.
"If I were attending an event and that next time I was back and that Tyrone was not with me, everyone would want to talk about" why was not Tyrone not with Where is Tyrone? "Senator Kaine said in an interview Friday.
Gayle and Kaine traveled to Virginia for the 2012 Senator's campaign, united by a common interest in sport, especially college football. Senator Kaine officiated at Mr. Gayle's wedding in May with Beth Foster, Legislative Assistant to Senator Patty Murray, Democrat of Washington State.
It was during the Clinton campaign that Mr. Gayle's cancer was diagnosed. After being in remission, the cancer has returned this year.
But his wife said that he had refused to let his illness slow him down. "From the moment he woke up in the morning to the time he went to bed, he was not the kind of guy to sit down," Ms. Gale said.
Tyrone Oliver Gayle was born on November 12, 1987 in Toronto. He was raised in Jacksonville, Florida, where he joined his track and field team. He continued to run as a Division 1 athlete at Clemson University in South Carolina, from where he graduated.
In politics, as in life, Mr. Gayle remained optimistic, said Ms. Adams, who worked with him in campaigns for Senators Kaine and Clinton, as well as in Senator Harris' office.
"He has never been cynical and would never let the cynicism of politics touch him," she said.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Gayle is survived by his father, Dr. Michael O. Gayle; his mother, Ann Gayle; and his sister, Tamara Gayle Black.
So many people came to social media to remember Mr. Gayle Friday that during part of the afternoon, "Tyrone" and "#GayleNation" were topical topics on Twitter in the Washington area.
Mrs. Clinton remembered Mr. Gayle as "one of the fiercest fighters we will ever know". In a statement, Senator Harris stated that she was "torn apart by loss".
