Rae Carruth made the headlines this week, as the Carolina Panthers first-round pick was released after 17 years in prison for orchestrating the shooting death of Cherica Adams, the woman carrying her child in 1999.
Adams underwent a caesarean section at the hospital to save this baby. His son, Chancellor Lee Adams, was delivered 10 weeks ahead of schedule. He is almost 19 years old and suffers from cerebral palsy and brain damage after being deprived of oxygen by his mother's shot.
The Panthers have wiped the situation since the liberation of Carruth, but the situation is changing.
Chancellor Lee Adams, grandmother will attend the match
Through Scott Fowler of the Charlotte Observer, Chancellor Lee and his full-time guardian, grandmother Saundra Adams, will attend Sunday's Panthers match against the Baltimore Ravens, with lower-level tickets, and they will also be on the field before the game.
"What a nice gesture on the part of the team!", Saundra Adams told Fowler. "We are both very excited."
As Fowler has written, it's long overdue.
Of course, the Panthers have nothing to do with the death of Cherica Adams, but the franchise has long been in a position to help a child born in horrible conditions.
Match Tickets Held by Longtime Panthers Fans
Chancellor Lee and Saundra Adams will attend the game on Sunday, thanks in large part to Carolina's longtime fan, Jason Underwood, the original PSL holder with the team. He became friends with Saundra after reading an article about her and the Chancellor Fowler had written in 2015.
"I was determined to get them to a match," said Underwood.
He tried for the first time to bring them to a match last year, even buying tickets, but Chancellor Lee fell ill and could not attend.
On Sunday, Underwood's teenage son Underwood, and the Adamse will sit together for the match.
Riley Fields, Director of Community Relations for the Panthers, also played a role in the formation of the Adamses.
