LOS ANGELES – The film-based streaming service FilmStruck closes after two years of operation. The service announced Friday on its website that the last day of service would be Nov. 29 and that it was registering more new subscribers.
The joint venture between Criterion Collection and Turner Classic Movies offered a rotating selection of classic and hard-to-find films. The site, launched in November 2016, offered a niche alternative to Hulu and Netflix, criticized for their lack of older films in their catalogs.
The news has been greeted with sadness by the filmmaker and the online cinephiles. The director of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", Rian Johnson, wrote on Twitter: "FilmStruck was too good to last"
Turner, a WarnerMedia subsidiary of AT & T, is the owner of FilmStruck.
