A 45-year-old man was released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of attempted theft of the Magna Carta.
The incident at Salisbury Cathedral took place shortly before 5 pm Thursday.
The alarms were triggered after an attempt to break the glass box surrounding the old document.
The Magna Carta has not been damaged.
The man was released on bail while officers were investigating.
