Results of Jacobs vs. Derevyanchenko: Danny Jacobs outclasses Derevyanchenko to claim a vacant title, summons Canelo | Boxing

Sergiy Derevyanchenko put Danny Jacobs on his heels for most of Saturday night.

But he responded under fire with the cleaner, harder blows. And the judges saw that too, giving Jacobs the victory over the split decision (115-112, 115-112 & 113-114). With this win, Jacobs left the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden as the new IBF Middleweight Champion. Jacobs did not hesitate to tell Max Kellerman of HBO that he wanted a piece of unified middleweight champion, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

"Yes, absolutely," says Jacobs. "It's the fight that fans want."

Jacobs had to dig deep on Saturday night, giving up Derevyanchenko's fierce, non-stop engine with targeted and punchy punches that paved the way for his victory.

Much of the conversation that began in the fight revolved around Jacobs and Derevyanchenko, former training partners with over 300 rounds of familiarity. Well, this discussion ended abruptly Saturday night in two highlights in the first round. At the exit of a hitch, Derevyanchenko ransacked Jacobs with a huge right hook. Stunned and visibly upset, Jacobs turned to the referee, as if to complain, being tagged again by his Ukrainian opponent. That should have kindled the fire under Jacobs, as the 31-year-old reacted a few moments later with a setback, cutting straight ahead of Derevyanchenko, letting him fall to his knees.

In many ways, this reversal was a preeminent theme in the fight because it was the way Jacobs warned Derevyanchenko that no matter how much he was the aggressor, "The Miracle Man" was going to charge every time.

And that's exactly what Jacobs did with a savvy veteran, overcoming Derevyanchenko's assaults and opposing them with sharp retorts.

Here's how the fight went.

(All the time is.)

12:05 pm: Jacobs def. Derevyanchenko by split decision (115-112, 115-112, 113-114).

Tour 12: These two players left everything at the Hulu Theater inside Madison Square Garden, hitting it for the last 90 seconds of the fight, while Jacobs pointed the cleaner harder, harder shots in the exchange. The two embrace after a hell of battle. SN won for Jacobs, but will the judges attribute to Derevyanchenko the fact of being the aggressor? (115-112 jacobs)

Tour 11: A left-right Jacobs combo shifted Derevyanchenko by the corner post. Derevyanchenko burst into the back, placing Jacobs against the ropes, but the native of Brooklyn stood up to Derevyanchenko and backed him up with a few hands. It was Jacobs' turn, while he was accompanying Derevyanchenko for several moments. What 12 round this should be! (105-103 jacobs)

Tour 10: This time, Derevyanchenko gave Jacobs a taste of this left hook, triggering an explosive exchange between the two. No matter the end of the fight, Derevyanchenko will leave this fight with many new fans. His style is hungry, enraged and fierce. He landed a body shot to finish the 10th round. Will it slow down Jacobs in the 11th? (95-94 jacobs)

Round 9: A hook from Jacobs dropped the saliva from Derevyanchenko's mouth after two minutes, but "The Miracle Man" was back on his heels, because of the constant movement of his Ukrainian opponent. However, Jacobs ended the round down Derevyanchenko, let's see if this will continue for the duration of this fight. (86-84 jacobs)

Round 8: Derevyanchenko does not give Jacobs much work, cutting the ring with his footwork. That said, Jacobs still managed to sneak into two tight cuts to make a counter-punch in the eighth round. Derevyanchenko is the fighter who advances, but when Jacobs has enough space, he fires solid shots. (76-75 jacobs)

Round 7: The most decisive of this fight has seen up here. While Derevyanchenko was in pursuit of the goal, hitting Jacobs with shots, "The Miracle Man" effectively raised his shoulders and slid shots, while shooting to close the round. Still, Derevyanchenko took this trick. (66-66)

Round 6: The best round of the fight to date, with the two fighters exchanging shots in a fight. Jacobs ducked under Derevyanchenko's right hook to fall on a punitive left. Derevyanchenko is the aggressor, but Jacobs makes him pay for his mistakes. (57-56 jacobs)

Round 5: Both fighters launch and land heavy and heavy fire. Whenever Derevyanchenko seems to be beating hard, Jacobs responds with something harder. Derevyanchenko did attack Jacobs' body in the fifth round. Derevyanchenko remains the busiest fighter, Jacobs seeming to wait for the dead point. (47-47).

Tour 4: Derevyanchenko picked up a left hook that let him leave his feet to make up for his disadvantage in terms of reach. He seems to be the busiest fighter to date. But Jacobs' talent and ardor are clearly visible as he escapes Derevyanchenko's heavier shots and charges him. Jacobs shook Derevyanchenko with a punitive right hook. That caused a burst in the middle of the ring with Jacobs peppered Derevyanchenko, before ending the round with a crisp left hook. This left hook seems to land at will for Jacobs. (38-37 jacobs)

Round 3: You see why Jacobs coach, Andre Rozier, dubbed Derevyanchenko "The Technician". He chooses his shots methodically, as evidenced by a solid third round which earned him a solid right hook, which Jacobs responded with a left hook. Derevyanchenko caught up with Jacobs with a burst later in the round, but Jacobs finished third with another left hook. Derevyanchenko would do well to watch this left hand, which seems to have found its mark. (28-28)

2nd round: Derevyanchenko put Jacobs on his bike in the second round with a wide left hook, followed by a solid combination behind it. It was the highlight of this second image. (19-18 jacobs)

Tour 1: Sergiy Derevyanchenko surprised Danny Jacobs with a big right hook. Jacobs turned to the referee, as if to complain, and Derevyanchenko again struck him. This immediately allowed Jacobs to realize that he was fighting with his former training partner. And "The Miracle Man" reacted accordingly, dropping Derevyanchenko with a chopped knife just to the rope. It was a dirty blow that found Derevyanchenko's head. (10-8 jacobs)

11:07: And here comes Danny Jacobs at the sound of the classic "Mama Said Knock You Out!" From LL Cool J Time of the main event! This is for the vacant IBF middleweight title.

11:06: HBO definitely does not waste time with this show. Sergiy Derevyanchenko is already in the ring.

11:03 p.m.: The crowd here at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden is still reeling from Machado's brilliant undergraduate KO, Yuandale Evans. Golden Boy seems to have a star on his hands with the 28-year-old champion, who improves to 21-0. Roy Jones Jr. said it best:

10:51 p.m.: Alberto Machado dropped Yuandale Evans with a left hook at the start of the first lap. Moments after Evans got up, he was struck by a right hook and a flurry of Machado had the referee who scored a total of eight points. From there, a vicious right hook ends things when Evans' head bounces off the canvas. Pulverizing KO of Machado, your winner and always champion. What a knockout!

10:46: Alberto Machado and Yuandale Evans are already in the ring for their 12-round clash for Machado WBA's "normal" junior lightweight title. Who takes this fight?

10:42: Hardy def. Vincent by unanimous decision (97-93, 97-93, 99-91). It was the kind of fight – the focus on fighting – that could have gone in the other direction in favor of Vincent. Whatever the case may be, this 99-91 score was too generous. With this victory, Heather Hardy becomes WBO's new women's featherweight champion. What a magical moment for this Brooklyn native, who insisted that female boxing be televised on HBO for years. Now she is crowned champion of HBO. It's bittersweet because of the network's swan song about boxing, but it's still a memorable one.

10:38: Once again, Hardy surprises Vincent with this uppercut, doing enough to take the trick. SN pulls this one in a draw, but Vincent was the aggressor of the majority of the rounds and we will see if the judges are part of the Providence team, originally from Rhode Island, because of that.

10:35: "The Heat" landed in the ninth round on Vincent's chin. Here is the 10th and last round.

10:28: This is a pure fire fight. Hardy and Vincent hit each other with a hard leather. In the seventh round, Vincent struck his rival inadvertently, which opened the skin of Hardy 's left eye. Vincent seems to have had the upper hand over the last four rounds to take advantage after seven rounds.

10:22: Vincent grabbed Hardy with a clean left hook in the body in the fifth round and the same shot later in the frame. Hardy needs to watch him as this match continues. SN to Vincent winning the fourth and fifth rounds.

10:17: Vincent manhandled Hardy to start the third round, adding intensity to an already fiery fight. But Hardy overcame the opening and caught Vincent with some vicious hooks left and right around the middle of the round. We have Hardy 30-27 to three.

10:11: This rematch was taken to the place where the initial fight ended – with a fireworks display. This first round has more than demonstrated that Heather Hardy and Shelly Vincent are willing to stand up and have heavy trade.

10:02: The lights are on and the main HBO card is in the works, with Shelly Vincent and Heather Hardy entering the ring. Their initial fight was an absolute war. What will the return match be? This one is intended for the vacant WBO female featherweight title.

9:54 p.m.: Preliminaries are in the books. The main map is about to start.
