A dozen animals were rescued from a private zoo on Sunday while they feared to be malnourished.

The Albanian authorities forced their way into the compound and found 12 animals: three lions, a bear, a waterbuck, four deer, a fox, a zebra and a turtle.

Veterinarians and animal welfare charities sedated the animals and took them to the public zoo in Tirana for treatment.

Four Paws spokesman Martin Bauer, involved in the rescue, said he would attempt to move the animals into sanctuaries.

He added that they wanted to relocate "the three lions into our center for FELIDA big cats in the Netherlands and the three-legged bear in our Muritz bear sanctuary in Germany".

They will also work on solutions to bring the remaining animals elsewhere.

However, this will only happen when the animals are healthy at the Tirana Zoo, which can take weeks.

Workers open a door at the zoo

The Albanian Ministry of Environment and Tourism has stated that the animals were captured because their housing was too narrow and some were sick.

Police and conservation officials opened the main gate of Safari Zoological Park Mbrostar, about 60 miles south of the capital, Tirana.

The owners closed the zoo following criticism of the treatment of their animals.

The owners denied that the animals were sick or malnourished.

Elvis Sulejmani, a lawyer from their country, said that they had completed all the necessary documentation concerning the animals.

They complained that the authorities illegally took possession of the animals without a court verdict.
