Cedar Grove, N.C. – Two people were killed early Sunday at a big party gathering about 300 people in a barn in Orange County.
Officers responded at Smokehouse Valley Farm, located at 5223 Mill Creek Road, around 1:30 am Officials said they were greeted by a large crowd of people leaving a party, with about 150 left.
According to officials, shots were fired during the party, injuring two people.
One of the victims is an 18-year-old woman, who officials discovered behind the party barn, shot in the head. The woman was flown to UNC hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A second member of the group was treated at Hillsborough UNC Hospital for a gunshot wound in his leg. The victim was treated and released.
Several officials were involved in the shooting, which probably started with a fight, but the group of 300 people was so important that the investigation was difficult.
"The parties and the large crowd gatherings are of particular concern," said Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood. "Crimes committed during these types of events are harder to investigate for law enforcement forces." At the time we are called, everyone is gone and the people who were present often do not want to cooperate or be identified, which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to get accurate accounts of what happened with credible witnesses. "
According to Blackwood, no arrests were made and the officers did not know how many gunmen were present or any other casualties.
"As a parent, we always worry about our children when they are away from us, no matter what their age," said Blackwood. It is difficult to make the call that no parent wants to receive; It's even more difficult when we do not have all the answers about what happened to their child. "
