A passenger plane travels from Jakarta to Pangkal Pinang in Indonesia has crashed into the sea, according to the country's search and rescue agency.
"Yusuf Latif," said spokesman for the agency, said, "when asked about the fate of the plane.
Flight JT610 lost contact 13 minutes after takeoff, according to the official. The jet was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, which can carry up to 200 passengers, depending on Flightradar 24.
It was not immediately clear how many people were on board.

"We can not give any comment at this time," said Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group. "We are trying to collect all the information and data."
A search and rescue effort has been launched for the plane, which departed Jakarta about 6.20am on Monday. It was scheduled to go to Pangkal Pinang at 7.20am.

A vessel traffic officer, Suyadi, told the Jakarta Post that at 6.45am he was told that it was a downed plane.
"At 7:15 am the tugboat reported it had been approaching the site and the crew of a plane," Suyadi told the Post. There were no reports about the passengers on board.
A tanker and cargo ship were also on the road.
The Boeing 737 MAX, an updated, more fuel-efficient version of the manufacturer's workhorse single-aisle jet. The first Boeing 737 MAX jets were introduced into service in 2017.
