HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) –

A driver in the opposite direction died after a collision with an 18-wheel truck early Monday morning, blocking the North Freeway at Spring Stuebner. The main roads have since reopened.

Debris was scattered on all northbound lanes. Diesel fuel is also on the highway.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said the driver of a Ford Mustang was heading south in northbound lanes, when he hit the 18-wheeled vehicle.

The driver of the Ford Mustang was killed instantly.

The authorities claim to have received calls for the driver for the first time in the wrong direction at around 2:43 am, about 90 seconds before the collision.

Officials are still investigating the exact location where the man started driving the wrong way on the highway. The police told ABC13 that some of the first calls received related to the location of I-45 and FM 2920.

The driver of the large platform was traveling at 45 mph, according to Sgt. Dashana Cheek-McNeal with HCSO.

She says that the crash site is on a slight slope. When the driver of the 18-wheeled vehicle arrived at the top, he saw the Mustang's headlights and tried to avoid them, but the Mustang continued in his direction and crashed into the HOV lane.

The driver of the 18-wheeled vehicle was not injured.

MPs are investigating whether alcohol is a factor.
