ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A retired police sergeant in St. Louis died after being shot down near Tower Grove Park on Monday morning.

The shooting took place around 7:30 am in the 3100 block of Lackland Avenue.

The retired officer was "unconscious and hardly breathing" during his transport to the hospital, according to police. At a press conference around 10 am, police chief John Hayden said the officer had died.

"It's very close to my home because I knew the sergeant personally and we all cry together," said Chief Hayden.

At the press conference, Chief Hayden stated that a person had been arrested at the hospital with a gunshot wound and that the police were using it to determine if she was associated with the shootings of the retired officer.

"There was a vehicle that dropped that person. We are also looking at some people to see if there is a connection between this vehicle and this incident, "he said.

Chief Hayden said that they were trying to put together a potential ground, but that they were studying it as a potential flight for the moment. He also stated that the incident occurred on the street after the retired policeman had left his wife out of the car.

"We know that there was a confrontation and an exchange of gunfire," said Chief Hayden. "Right now, we are trying to gather all the specifics of this type of incident."

Two suspects were arrested after a black SUV, apparently related to the shooting, was found in the Jefferson area, south of Interstate 44, about three hours after the shooting.

The sergeant had been in force for 35 years and had been retired for 10 years, according to Chief Hayden. He would come to a police family with more than 200 years of combined service.

"He was a very good person, a great personality, a very warm and compassionate person," said Chief Hayden. "It concerns you a little differently when you personally know the person involved. I apologize for my emotions, but at the same time I knew him personally and I am still close to the family members. "

The police did not publicly disclose the name of the retired sergeant, but said his last posting was in the underage division.

This is a last-minute story and will be updated as the information is disseminated.
