Bigger brains linked to higher cancer risk: study

London, Oct. 30 (IANS) According to a new study, having a larger brain is directly associated with a higher risk of brain cancer.

The study showed that a larger brain was made up of more brain cells, which resulted in more cell divisions that could go wrong and create mutations that increased the risk of cancer.

"Aggressive brain cancer is a rare type of cancer, but once you have it, the chances of survival are relatively low," said Even Hovig Fyllingen, a postdoctoral student at the Norwegian University of Science and Engineering. technologies.

"Several studies have shown that the size of different organs is an important factor in the development of cancer.Women with larger breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer. We wanted to check if this was also the case for brain tumors, "said Fyllingen.

For the study, published in the journal Neuro-Oncology, the university team used MRI to measure the brain size of 124 patients.

Then, 3D models were made from these so that the intracranial brain volume can be measured in milliliters.

The results of the study revealed that women with large brains are at greater risk of developing a brain tumor than men with wide brains.

"Men have bigger brains than women because their bodies are usually bigger, but that does not mean that men are smarter, but you need more brain cells to control a large body," Fyllingen said. .
