Sao Paulo: Brazilian football was in shock Monday after the announcement by the authorities of the death of midfielder Daniel Correa, aged 24, found almost beheaded, cut genitals.
His original club, Sao Paulo FC, which he joined in 2015, paid tribute to Correa. Players observed a minute of silence before Monday's training.
Correa had been loaned in the second division, Sao Bento, at his death.
Sao Paulo said in a statement that he had been "found dead this weekend". Other Brazilian clubs and players have also paid tribute.
Parana state police in the south of the country said that Correa's body was found Saturday in a rural area on the outskirts of the capital, Curitiba.
The authorities said that an investigation into his death was "advanced" and that family members would be questioned.
A police source told S.Paulo's Folha newspaper that Correa had had her throat sliced so wide that her head had almost been cut off. His genitals were also severed.
Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world, where last year, a record number of people were murdered, or 30,880, or about 30.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.
The United Nations considers a murder rate higher than 10 per 100,000 citizens as the threshold of endemic violence.
Correa made his professional debut at Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro in 2013, alongside the great Dutch Clarence Seedorf.
With a talent for dribbling, fans have dubbed him "Daniel Messi".
But a serious knee injury in 2014 limited his progress and Correa has never been able to keep his promise.
