Classifying teams is a centuries-old tradition in college football. It goes back to the first Associated Press poll in 1936. But what can we learn from the first four years of the CFP ranking?
Of the 16 teams that the committee ranked in the top four of its 2014-17 initial ranking, half participated in the playoffs. Last season, for the first time, three teams (Georgia, Alabama and Clemson) placed in the top four and ranked among the best (Clemson is the only team to be in the top four of the six rankings of the committee) .
In 2015 and 2016, two of the first four teams on the committee qualified for the playoffs. These two years, Alabama and Clemson started in the first four places and never went out. Clemson was No. 1 in all 25 top committees in 2015 and Alabama ranked first in all six rankings in 2016.
The first-ever committee standings in 2014 included only one playoff team. They included three teams from the Southeast Conference (although not the one that eventually made the playoffs) with the state of Florida.
That year, the committee made a splash by defeating undefeated national champion Florida State in third place behind No. 2 Oregon, who lost a game. This seemed to give the impression that the committee would be different from the traditional polls which tended to honor a record of wins / losses. Penultimate, Florida State was four points behind three teams that had already lost. The Seminoles entered the semifinal of the Rose Bowl as the third seeded and lost to Oregon.
Of the eight teams in the last four seasons who were in the top four but did not play in the playoffs, only one was not ranked Sunday. Texas A & M in 2016 was a bit surprising # 4, and then proceeded to lose three of his last four games. Auburn (2014), LSU (2015) and Notre Dame (2017) were the other teams to rank among the top four on the committee, but did not even qualify for the Six Nations New Year Cup.
The playoff team that made the longest climb in the committee standings at the finals was the Ohio State, which started 16th in 2014 and moved to the semifinal in fourth place and won the championship. In 2015, Oklahoma ranked 15th in the first top 25 and fourth Sunday in selection.
In the last two seasons, none of the qualifying teams for the playoffs has been ranked worse than the sixth (Ohio State in 2016) in the top committee standings.
Supporters in central Florida, for example, have criticized the committee for not placing the teams outside the Power Five conferences high enough. The UCF was No. 18 in the top 25 last year of the CFP, the best performance of a school of the five in all initial rankings. The Knights finished 12th, the highest ranking for any non-Power Five team in all committee rankings over the four seasons.
