Giants coach Pat Shurmur said "There will be consequences for this type of behavior" after Kyle Lauletta was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with a third-degree offense of the police after a motor vehicle incident.
Speaking on WFAN radio with host Mike Francesa at 4 p.m. Tuesday just after the NFL trade deadline passed, Shurmur said Lauletta was back at the team facility. He missed Tuesday morning's driving class after the incident at 8 am on the road 495 in Weehawken.
"This is not going to be taken lightly," said Shurmur during his weekly appearance.
Shurmur also described the incident as being reported by NJ Advance Media as "disturbing" after his initial statement called "disappointing."
The Giants appeared to be playing with Lauletta sooner than later with the team stuck at 1-7 and Manning's future in question. There is a bye this weekend before a Nov. 12 trip to the equally lowly 49ers.
But Shurmur did not rule out the possibility of a suspension for Lauletta, whose full charges include eluding police, obstructing justice and resisting arrest. He also was hit with multiple motor vehicle violations, said police in a news release.
The traffic stop was not first in Weehawken, police said. Just 24 hours earlier Lauletta pulled the same stunt in the same location, but cops did not chase him down. Instead they are summoned for the offenses, police said.
Will Lauletta's actions on the road cost him a chance to get on the field as a rookie?
"Let me go out what happened today a little bit more," Shurmur said.
The Giants practice Wednesday morning before breaking by the next Tuesday, which is the next time Shurmur and players are expected to address media.
