CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) – Update on a fatal shooting at a North Carolina high school (local time):
6:25 p.m.
An affidavit filed in connection with a fatal shooting in a North Carolina high school indicates that a recent fight in a parking lot of a shop might have triggered the shooting.
The WSOC-TV in Charlotte announced in an arrest affidavit in Mecklenburg County, based on an interview with the police, that Jatwan Cuffie was involved in the fight last Friday with four other boys in front of a grocery store. According to the affidavit, Bobby McKeithen was not involved in the fight, but was asked his opinion on the winner.
The affidavit says that Cuffie took a gun to school to protect herself on Monday, and when teens arrived at Butler High School, McKeithen hit Cuffie in the face while they were in a corridor. According to the affidavit, Cuffie then shot McKeithen and went to a classroom where a teacher took a bag with the weapon.
Police Matthews, a suburb of Charlotte, said Tuesday that the gun would have been stolen in August.
Cuffie appeared in court on Tuesday, charged with first degree murder. His public defender asked for a weak bond and Cuffie was placed under his mother's care. A bail hearing on this matter is scheduled for November 7.
