LOS ANGELES – Intelligence officers and Chinese hackers working for them have been accused of commercial espionage, including attempted theft of information about the reactors, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.
The charges related to two officers working for the Nanjing-based foreign intelligence service of the Chinese Ministry of State Security and six other defendants allegedly conspiring from 2010 to 2015 to steal a sensitive turbojet engine technology used in commercial aviation.
Hackers used spear phishing to deploy malware and other means to interfere in a French aerospace company that was developing engines with an American company, prosecutors said. The suspects also hacked aerospace firms from Massachusetts, Oregon, and Arizona that were manufacturing engine parts.
A state-owned Chinese aerospace company was then working on the development of a similar engine type intended for commercial aircraft.
"This action is another example of the criminal efforts by the (Ministry of State Security) to facilitate the theft of private data for China's commercial gain," said US Attorney Adam Braverman in a statement. communicated. "Concerted efforts to steal, rather than just buy, commercially available products should shock all companies that invest talent, energy and shareholder money into product development."
In recent years, the Justice Ministry has initiated similar lawsuits against Chinese military or government officials accused of hacking American companies to steal secrets and prosecutors pledged to redouble d & # 39; efforts.
In 2014, for example, the ministry announced the indictment of five army officers accused of having penetrated the computer systems of major manufacturers of nuclear and solar technology and of having stolen confidential business information, sensitive trade secrets and internal communications to gain competitive advantage.
Earlier this month, a suspected Chinese spy, suspected of attempting to steal the secrets of several US companies in the aviation and aerospace industries, was extradited to federal authorities US. United States for trial.
None of the eight accused named in the unsealed indictment on Tuesday at the San Diego Federal Court were in detention and the United States is not bound by an extradition treaty with China.
Prosecutors said the hackers had tried to infiltrate 13 companies, including two from the UK-based aerospace sector.
The indictment mentioned only one of the companies targeted, claiming that the first alleged piracy in January 2010 was aimed at stealing data from Capstone Turbine, a Los Angeles-based gas turbine manufacturer.
