Falcon & Winter Soldier Disney Streaming Series in the Works

Sam Wilson aka Falcon and Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier are coming together for a limited series at Disney’s upcoming streaming service. Joining Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in nabbing their own small screen shows, the upcoming series is expected to feature Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan reprising their big screen roles.

Captain America’s best buds first met in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as adversaries. But over the years – and Bucky’s evolution from villain to hero – the two eventually teamed-up in Captain America: Civil War, and again in the battle against Thanos during Avengers: Infinity War. Both of them were part of the unfortunate half of the universe who were snuffed out of existence following the Mad Titan’s catastrophic snap, but as it turns out, the two will return, and with an adventure of their own in an in-development TV series.

Variety reports that Marvel Studios has tapped Empire writer Malcolm Spellman to write the proposed limited series featuring Falcon and Winter Soldier, making it the first out of all the planned shows to get a significant development movement. Both Disney and Marvel have declined comment for now.

As previously mentioned, both heroes are currently a pile of dust following Thanos’ galactic genocide, but considering the two’s narrative arc so far in the MCU, it’s safe to say that the show will take place after the events of the twin Avengers sequels have been resolved. That means like Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), as well as Maria Hill (Colbie Smulders), the two will be brought back to life one way or another in Avengers 4. The development of this new show also poses some interesting question with regard to Steve Rogers fate in next year’s Phase 3 capper, seeing as Bucky (who now goes by the White Wolf) and Sam only ever came together because of him. In fact, they’re not even that fond of each other as highlighted in their bickering in Civil War,  and have never spent time with each other with just the two of them

It’s important to note, however, that without any confirmation from either Disney or Marvel, it’s best to treat this as a rumor for now. But if anything, it further highlights that fact that the Netflix Marvel TV shows are increasingly becoming more unimportant in the MCU despite them supposedly all connected together. Out of the three reported in-development Marvel shows for the streaming platform, Bucky and Falcon’s could be the most grounded – something that Daredevil and Jessica Jones are known for. Considering that both characters don’t deal with mystical elements, it could simply be a well-made heist film or even an action thriller like The Winter Soldier.
