Lime tears off some of his scooters as they can catch fire

It's an embarrassing setback for the billion-dollar startup whose scooters are available for rent in dozens of cities around the world, including via the Uber app.
In an article published Tuesday on the blog, Lime said the batteries manufactured by Segway Ninebot – the company behind the Segway scooters – can burn and in some cases catch fire. Lime used the batteries in the early versions of its vehicles.
The Segway was supposed to change the world. Two decades later, it could be

The startup announced that it had removed the affected scooters in Los Angeles, San Diego and the Lake Tahoe area, the three locations where they were operating.

"Immediately after learning of the defect, we worked with Segway Ninebot to create software to detect potentially affected batteries," said Lime. "We then worked independently to create even more comprehensive software to ensure that no potentially defective scooters remain outstanding."

The problem concerns 0.01% of its total fleet, according to the company. But his battery problems do not stop there.

Another version of his scooters "could also be vulnerable to battery failures, which we are currently investigating," he said.

In July, Uber invested in Lime as part of a $ 335 million fundraising effort to get the scooter up and running. This agreement has allowed users of the Uber application to find Lime scooters. The Uber brand has also been added to scooters.
This electric scooter could be fun. He could also be deadly

The electric scooter industry has already had a year of ups and downs. Cities in the United States have acted aggressively to control and even close businesses like Lime and Bird Rides, when hundreds of scooters have flooded their streets and cluttered their sidewalks, apparently at night early in the year.

But some cities later softened their stance by realizing that scooters could play a vital role in reducing congestion, reducing pollution and strengthening public transport.
The success of scooter startups in getting people to use their vehicles has attracted investors. The July round of funding valued lime at $ 1.1 billion. His rival Bird Rides was valued at $ 2.2 billion.

The Ninebot Segway was not immediately available to comment late Tuesday on the battery issues reported by Lime.
