A study released this year, which examined news reports from October 2011 to November 2017, found there were 259 selfie deaths globally in this period. Selfie-related deaths were most likely to occur in India, followed by Russia and the United States, and males were three times more likely than females to die in selfie-related accidents.

The researchers concluded that selfie deaths are “an emerging problem” and recommended the introduction of ‘no selfie zones’ in dangerous areas, such as on top of tall buildings, on mountain peaks, and around large bodies of water.
