The Duchess arrived at the museum today where she will see letters about her great-grandmother's brothers, and Discover his family ties with the First World War.

Wearing a classic navy blue dress, Kate was photographed outside the iconic building to showcase a delicate array of poppies, set up to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day on November 11th.

The Duchess will consult letters from decades ago, kept in the archives of the museum to recall the sacrifice of those who fought in the First World War.

She will also visit the galleries of the First World War and immerse herself in the lives of her loved ones for years of battle.

Kate received a series of letters and documents about three members of her family who lost their lives during the First World War.

Kate's great-great-grandfather Francis Martineau Lupton had five children, three of whom – Francis, Maurice and Lionel – were killed in action.

The Duchess was even shown archival letters that her relatives had sent home to their families during their absence.

King George V sent a letter of condolence from the guardian of the private treasury of Buckingham Palace after the death of the soldiers.

The letter said: "The king realizes that he is the beloved third son you have given to the cause of your country and His Majesty hopes that strength and comfort will be given to you in the sorrow you have been called to bear."
