A set of personal belongings that belonged to the late Stephen Hawking, one of the most renowned physicists in history, is now auctioned at Christie's.
As of Wednesday, an online sale entitled "On the shoulders of giants" is open to the public. It includes 22 personal items belonging to the renowned scientist, including a copy of his doctorate from 1963. thesis and ending with his iconic wheelchair.
"This is a scientist who made cosmology understandable to people," Chris Hopkins, manuscript and archive specialist at Christie's, told ABC News. "The same scientist who, at the same time, thought The Simpsons was the best thing on American television."
Hawking died in March at the age of 76, fifty-five years after he had only two years left to live.
At the age of 21, Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease in which neurons responsible for voluntary movement die. The disease left him paralyzed. Proceeds from the sale of the Hawking chair at the auction will go to the Stephen Hawking Foundation and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Other items on sale include a signed copy of his bestseller, "A Brief History of Time," and other honors awarded to the scientist, a jacket, a portrait and the scenario of Hawking's original production in Simpsons.
"We want to give a complete impression of him, as a scientist and as a human being," Hopkins said.
Items for sale start at £ 100 or around $ 125. The auction will end on November 8th.
