MILWAUKEE – The coach of the brewers, Derek Johnson, is leaving the team. This is the third outing of manager Craig Counsell's team since the end of the season.
General Manager David Stearns said Wednesday that Johnson was leaving the Central League champions. Johnson finished his third season with the Brewers, overseeing a team that was fifth in the majors with a points average of 3.73.
The Brewers' coffee machine also finished fifth in the majors, with an average of 3.47 points, but it was even better in September with an average of 1.98.
The striking head coach, Darnell Coles, resigned last week, while head coach, Lee Tunnell, was fired. The Brewers also fired chief sports coach Dan Wright last week.
Also Thursday, Milwaukee declined the $ 3.5 million club option on Jordan Lyles, turning the right-handed pitcher into a free agent. Lyles gets a $ 250,000 buyout instead.
The Brewers chose Lyles on August 5th, after obtaining a waiver from the San Diego Padres. He was 1-0 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 games, all in relief, with Milwaukee.
Lyles is 3-4 with an average of 4.11 in 35 games, including eight starts with San Diego.
