Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has always dealt with the reputation of being the ”third person” in the marriage between Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
But her relationship with Charles, which spans four decades, is more than just a scandalous affair.
Today the two are happily married but, before reaching marital bliss they had to tackle scandal, tabloid drama and even tragedy in order to maintain their love.
According to Charles’ authorised autobiography, he began his affair with Camilla in 1986 – a decade before his divorce from Diana was confirmed.
During this time, Charles often turned to his grandmother for support in his marital difficulties, according to Netflix documentary “The Royal House of Windsor”.
Britain’s future King, had a close relationship with the Queen Mother, as well as with Camilla, who both gave Charles unconditional love.
Royal writer Piers Brendon explains: “The Queen Mother is relatively broad-minded.
“She didn’t mind Prince Charles having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, provided that this did not become a scandal.”
Mr Brendon adds that the Queen Mother “was worried that a scandal like this could be blown up into something that could wreck the monarchy” but stood by Charles all the way, offering him advice.
The Queen Mother had seen a scandal like this before when King Edward VIII proposed to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who was divorced from her first husband and was pursuing the divorce of her second.
It ended in near-catastrophe for the Royal Family, as Edward abdicated the throne, putting the future of the monarchy in doubt.
The Queen Mother was all too aware that a similar fate could befall Charles but used her experience to make sure the affair was dealt with and did not develop into a scandal of similar magnitude.
In footage from the show, the narrator says: “The Queen Mother allowed the couple [Charles and Camilla] to use her Scottish home, Birkhall, as a bolthole.”
