DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas (KXAN) — A rabid live bat was found last week when it fell out of a student’s jacket at Sycamore Springs Elementary School in Dripping Springs ISD.
The Hays County Sheriff’s Office was called to the school on Friday, Oct. 26, located at 14451 Sawyer Ranch Rd., around 3 p.m. for the report of a live bat.
The bat fell out of the pocket as the student was tossing the jacket around, the sheriff’s office said.
A school district spokesperson said the teacher immediately isolated the bat to prevent the student from coming into contact with it. “Appropriate follow-up action” was taken with the student who was potentially exposed to the bat, the district said.
The bat was examined and has tested positive for the rabies virus.
If you or someone else may have come in physical contact with the bat, please call: Hays County Sheriff’s Office, Animal Control Unit at (512) 393-7896 or the Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control at (254) 778- 6744.
