Earlier today, honestly, I had no idea who Nick Mullens was. Well, he's changing things tonight as an unregistered free agent who was part of the 49ers practice team all year and promoted after Garoppolo's injury, just helped to emasculate the Raiders from Jon Gruden. Mullens finished the match at 16 for 22 for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.
It's the best start to the year for a free agent under the age of 25. I do not even think it's a particularly scandalous statement. Mullens, who played at Southern Miss, is only 23 years old and has managed an almost perfect match against a perfectly terrible opponent.
Here are some of the other candidates, because there are only four other unredeemed free agents under 25 to have a smuggler over 90 at their first start:
-Jake Delhomme debuted week 15 in 1999 for the sadly Holy Saints playing on a team that had broken the "never start two different guys named Billy Joe" rule and went from 2-12. Delhomme threw for 278 yards, 2 touchdowns and also rushed for another while the Saints upset the Troy Aikman Cowboys. Delhomme would start the next game and read four interceptions, then disappear a few years before making his appearance in Carolina, leaving the bench to win the first game of 2003 and go to the Super Bowl.
-Matt McGloin replaced Terrelle Pryor in the 13th week of the 2013 season and, while totaling only 6.2 yards per attempt, he had three touchdown passes and led the Raiders to the surprise of the Texans. He would start the remaining five games this year and start 8 interceptions against 5 touchdowns, all defeats.
– Dave Krieg replaced Jim Zorn in December 1981. He made three interceptions in his first start, but averaged 10 yards per attempt and over 75% of his passes as the Seahawks defeated the Jets. Krieg became the full-time starter two years later and was going to start 119 games in Seattle.
-Ed Rubbert was Washington's starter in the 1987 lockout. He started 3 touchdown passes and over 300 yards on his first start. Washington scored a 3-0 win with the substitutes, a key factor for the team to start the playoffs hosting the NFC championship game against the Vikings. He never started an NFL game again.
