CLEVELAND, OHIO – The popular Fall Brawl gold derby on Lake Erie proves that shore throwing is very productive at this time of year. The new leader of the derby is Greg Wargo, who has checked the first 10 books of the competition, which runs until December 2. The most interesting is that Wargo launched a scuba dive from Battery Park on the Sandusky shoreline when he hung up and landed the golden 10.705 pounds, 28.5 inches after dark. Shawn Good (9,880 pounds) and Brian Mazza (9,680 pounds) are currently second and third. Jeremy Gregory heads the Kid's Division with a 9,160-pound walleye.
LAKE ERIE
Anglers reported good catches of walleye and yellow perch all along the Ohio coastline. The deeper waters of the central basin, from Huron to Conneaut, were the best, although strong winds tempered the success of the fishery earlier in the week.
Off the coast of Lorain and Cleveland, warm depths have been measured between 42 and 45 feet, while Fairport Harbor anglers work in a large school of walleye in 47-55 feet of water. Dive levelers and minnow plugs have been productive, with the Bandit and Bay Rat lures catching the big gold when they run 60 to 90 feet back. The pink, the purple and the chartreuse were the best colors of lure.
Walleye fishermen in the western basin are doing well in waters over 40 feet off Huron, Cranberry Creek and Vermilion. Yellow perch limits have been reported in recent days off Cranberry Creek in the Huron area and in 45 to 50 feet of water off Fairport Harbor.
Walleye night fishing has been very good from the Marblehead docks and breakwaters to Lorain. Fishermen launch Marvin Perfect 10 and Husky Jerk lures after sunset.
RIVERS, INLAND LAKES, RESERVOIRS
This week's rains have raised and muddy all the rivers and streams in northeastern Ohio, but these conditions were part of the wish list for rainbow trout fishing. This is because swollen rivers attract the first major rounds of the steelhead trout season, and the Rocky and Chagrin and Conneaut Creek rivers should be exceptional for trout as the rivers settle, followed by the Grand River.
The spinning fishermen will soon use jig-fly platforms across the basins under a float. Fly fishermen must launch egg and minnow patterns as well as pearl head nymphs.
The autumn bite is heating up, with Mogadore Lake and Portage Lakes Chain, both good for catching cakes. Working with minnows about three or four feet under a float around the meadows is a good choice. Yellow perch of good size were caught near the coast in these lakes, and large red sunfish are caught at Lake Nimisila.
Channel catfish and rainbow trout stored at the Ohio & Erie Canal Reservoir in Cuyahoga Heights for the recent Fall Family Fishing Festival are still numerous and will delight night owls. Rainbow trout will be released in the waters of Cleveland Metroparks in mid-December for winter fishing.
The Cleveland Metroparcs will maintain a courtesy launch dock in operation in the Rocky River Marina until Thanksgiving.
