LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The adage that a dog is the man's best friend for a man from New Mexico last week.

Sonny "Tex" Gilligan, from Doña Ana County, was accidentally wounded by a bullet, his Lab-Rottweiler mix of 120 pounds, during a hunter hunting party, the Las Cruces Sun News announced.
Gilligan, 74, was sitting in the driver's seat of his pickup truck with his three dogs – Charlie, Cowboy and Scooby – as he was looking for jackrabbits west of Las Cruces, KRQE reported. His rifle was in the back seat of the vehicle when the dog's paw got stuck in the gun, reported the TV channel.
"Charlie put his foot in the gun trigger and I leaned forward. He slid off the seat and grabbed the trigger – and the shot was fired, "Gilligan told Sun News. "It was a weird accident but it's true, that's what happened."
The ball went through the siege and Gilligan was hit in the back, Sun News reported. The bullet broke Gilligan's collarbone, pierced a lung and broke a few ribs, the newspaper reported.
"I was very lucky to be able to access my phone," Gilligan told Sun News. "The first responders from DASO (Doña Ana County Sheriff's Office) saved my life." "They had waited for 10 minutes more, I would have died." I lost so much blood I know I went on the other side just before arriving at the hospital but they managed to revive me through CPR and bring me back in. I'm very grateful to the doctors and the first responders who saved my life. "
Gilligan was taken to a hospital in El Paso, Texas, where he stayed in intensive care for several days before being moved to another room.
"He's lucky to be alive," Gilligan's son Mark Gilligan said at Santa Fe New Mexican.
Although Charlie could have killed him, Elder Gilligan said he had forgiven his long-time pet.
"He spoils his dogs, you know, he calls them his boys," Mark Gilligan told KRQE. He loves his animals very much. "
The three dogs were sent to the Mesilla Valley Animal Services Center after the shootings, Sun News reported.
"Poor Charlie, it's a good dog," Sonny Gilligan told the newspaper. "The sheriff's department said the only problem was Cowboy, the other two were friendly, Charlie is the boss, but he's nice."
Gilligan joked that his son was able to "scramble" the dogs, the Sun News reported.
