The leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-S) was transferred to the DHQ hospital before succumbing to his injuries.

Haq was a prominent political and religious figure in Pakistan; he was a member of the Senate of Pakistan from 1985 to 1991 and again from 1991 to 1997.

He was director of Darul Uloom Haqqania, one of the largest and most influential madrassas (seminaries) of Pakistan, located at Akora Khattak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
