Four earthquakes hit successively from 13:00 GMT today (06:00 local time) with a force ranging from 4.1 to 3.0.
The first hit 25 miles east of Monterey, California at 12:58 GMT, with aftershocks recorded until 1:22 pm, according to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
All were struck at relatively shallow depths between 6.5 km and 4.9 km below the surface of the Earth, USGS said.
The earthquakes were strong enough to be felt by local residents who had visited the site of the earthquake monitoring site to share their experiences.
One of them, in Hollister, said, "I was sleeping, I felt like someone was shaking the bed."
Another resident of Monterey Bay said he is concerned about recent earthquakes that could indicate that a major earthquake – commonly called the "Great" – could occur.
They wrote, "You've had a lot of tremors over the last few months.
"The Hayward Fault is expected and starts bumping. At any time now. It will certainly come relatively soon.
After the series of earthquakes, no tsunami warning has been issued.
Experts say California has long been waiting for a huge earthquake and that a magnitude of 7.0 is likely in the next 30 years.
According to a 2008 report by USGS, the Hayward Fault, which runs east of San Francisco, is a "tectonic time bomb" that could threaten the city's seven million inhabitants.
In 1989, San Francisco was hit by a magnitude 6.9 earthquake, caused by the more famous San Andreas fault.
Sixty-three people were killed in the earthquake, while thousands of others are homeless.
