SANTA CLARA – Quarterback Nick Mullens made his NFL debut on Thursday night in the 49-3 win against the Raiders at Levi's Stadium.
Mullens completed 16 of his 22 passes for a total of 262 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions, while he was entering the starting lineup instead of injured C.J. Beathard.
Mullens compiled a score of 151.9 for smugglers – the best NFL debut performance among players with 16 or more pass attempts in league history. Marcus Mariota had a perfect score of 158.3 in his Titan debut in 2015, but he had only 15 attempts.
Mullens is one of three players since 1950 to have amassed 250 yards or more, three or more touchdowns, with no interceptions in his debut. The other two are Hall of Famers: Fran Tarkenton (1961) and Jim Kelly (1986). Kelly, however, was not making her first professional appearance. He previously played two seasons in the USFL.
Mullens became the first quarterback of the 49ers, in his NFL debut, to throw two touchdown passes or more. He also tied TD's franchise record in his first start, joining Tim Rattay (2003), Ty Detmer (1998) and Matt Cavanaugh (1984).
But Mullens was not alone in his brilliant debut. Here are some Pro Football Focus measures taken from the 49ers' most unbalanced victory since a 42-10 win against the Jaguars in 2013:
– The 49ers' offensive line of Joe Staley, Laken Tomlinson, Weston Richburg, Mike Person and McGlinchey has given way to quarterback pressure. Person authorized to hurry.
George Kittle scored four catches on his four goals for 108 yards. Each of his targets has won a first try or touchdown. He leads the NFL among the tight ends in the receiving yards (692), the yards driven (2.7) and the yards after the capture (490).
– Linebacker Dekoda Watson played only 13 assists, but totaled six pressures with 1.5 sacks and four quick passes. Watson made his first appearance of the season after spending the first eight games on the reserve with a thigh injury.
– The defensive wing Cassius Marsh played 22 assists and recorded 2.5 sacks and 3 assists.
– Cornerback Richard Sherman and Ahkello Witherspoon allowed only 57 yards at the front desk. Sherman allowed receptions the two times he was targeted, but for only 12 yards. Witherspoon allowed three passes on four targets for 45 yards.
