Bolsonaro appoints judge who imprisoned rival
RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazilian right-wing president Jair Bolsonaro has persuaded crusader Sergio Moro to become his justice minister, the two supporters said Thursday.
Moro oversaw the investigation "Operation Car Wash" which had sent former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to prison, preventing him from standing against Bolsonaro. A 46-year-old telegenic man who had previously denied political ambition, Moro went to Bolsonaro's beachfront home in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, where they met before announcing the decision.
"His anti-corruption and anti-organized crime program, as well as his respect for the laws and the constitution, will be our guide," Bolsonaro tweeted. The elected president has won a clear political victory with the nomination of Moro, who has been worshiping in Brazil after locking up a series of politicians and businessmen.
But his appointment also gives ammunition to opponents of Bolsonaro, who have long argued that the Car Wash probe was a politicized purge designed to defeat Lula and his left-wing Workers Party (PT).
"Moro will be the minister of Bolsonaro after his decisive role in his election, preventing Lula from running," tweeted PT president Gleisi Hoffmann. "Fraud of the century!" Moro's decision to work with Bolsonaro carries risks.
