There is a new way to enjoy the orcas that live at Puget Sound. They are now starting to return to their area and the Orca network has just installed a new underwater microphone, also called a hydrophone, located on the west side of Whidbey Island, to monitor their activity.
This is a new tool to monitor the orcs of southern residents.
"We all have this innate curiosity to know what they say," said Scott Veirs, coordinator of the Orca Network. "We are a very vocal special. Killer whales are also very vocal. They make a wide range of sounds, ranging from clicks to whistles. "
In the fall and early winter, orcas feed on salmon in the Puget Sound.
"We can hear the killer whales 10 kilometers away, which gives about 6 km," said Veirs.

Scientists say the Orca population is fighting for a number of reasons, including the dwindling chinook salmon population and the water noise that prevents whales – who use sound to navigate – to feed.
