An armed man opened fire in a yoga studio in Tallahassee, Florida on Friday, killing two women and wounding five others before killing himself, authorities said. Tallahassee police identified the gunman as Scott Paul Beierle, 40.
Seven victims were taken to a local hospital, police said. Six were shot and one was flogged. Two of the victims have died, while two others are in stable condition. Three were released.
Police believe that the gunman acted alone and police chief Michael DeLeo said there was no threat to the community. "There is no immediate threat outside of what has already happened tonight," DeLeo said.
The motive is still unknown, said the police.
She Welling, a resident who lives nearby, said she saw several people being taken on an ambulance. "You do not think about it in Tallahassee and you have to do it now," Welling told The Associated Press.
The mayor of Tallahassee, Andrew Gillum, who is the Democratic nominee for the governorship, said he was withdrawing from the election campaign and was returning to the city.
"I am deeply grateful for the rapid response of law enforcement forces to the shooting that took place today at the Tallahassee Yoga Center, no act of gun violence is acceptable", he declared. tweeted. "I am in close communication with the law enforcement officials and will be returning to Tallahassee tonight."
