Students and staff of Pine Bluff School District’s Belair Academy wore pink during a special event Oct. 26 to show support for those fighting cancer.

The theme was “PBSD is Pink Strong! We don’t fight CANCER alone!”

The activity was co-sponsored by their community partners, What’s Next Pine Bluff and Novel Ts, to spread the word about steps women and men can take to detect and treat breast cancer early, according to a news release.

Guest speakers were Pamela Dorn, Pine Bluff School District school nurse, and Sara Hardin, a retired nurse.

They informed students and staff that breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women.

“They also stated that breast cancer is something that people can survive if found early and treated,” according to the release.

Dorn encouraged students to reach out to make a difference by spreading the word to family members and friends about getting regular exams as well as making healthy lifestyle choices.

Hardin also talked about the importance of mammograms and using the cancer information pamphlets she gave them to start a conversation that might save a life.

Belair Principal Eric Elders spoke to students about the consequences and importance of taking care of one’s health while they are young.

“Healthy habits can help prevent cancer and numerous other health conditions, such as heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure,” Elders said.

Also during the event, the teachers’ Parade, Hype and Prize Teams took the stage.

They taught students, “fight cancer” chants and marched around the campus with them to raise awareness and make a difference.

This was followed up with door prizes and participation prizes for outstanding Breast Cancer Awareness Posters made by students and staff during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“A healthy snack for a healthy lifestyle was given to students at the end of the day. This event was a great educational success,” according to the release.
