What is Movember: Why should you develop your "Stache for a good cause"

[ad_1]

Almost every year, somewhere between Halloween and Thanksgiving, you may notice that many of your friends and colleagues have started to ignore their razors – cunningly growing facial hair worthy of a lumberjack, a villain silent film or a musketeer. Some of them may even be old unexpected friends like the giant green Jolly, Mr. Monopoly or Mr. Peanut. Why this sudden precipitation for hirsute? Because it's Movember, of course, and the time has come to focus on men's health.

What is Movember?

The Movember Foundation was created in Australia to stimulate prostate cancer awareness. It was brought to the United States in 2007. Since then, its scope has expanded to include all kinds of problems affecting men, from testicular cancer to mental health.

The statistics on prostate cancer, suicide and testicular cancer are grim … a bit too sinister for this happy time of the year. Prostate cancer kills 45 men every hour and one in nine men will be diagnosed in their lifetime. Globally, we also lose 60 men each year. It's 105 men lost every 60 minutes for these two problems only. Added to this is testicular cancer, the most common cancer in men under 40 years of age.

But Movember's goal is not to sink into misery, but to make a difference by raising awareness and funding for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

How can you make a difference?

First, register online. You know what will happen next: make it grow! While letting your mustache act, harass everyone you know with donations to raise funds to tackle the tough issues that men face today. Third, go ahead and move: walk or run 60 miles this month to mark the 60 men we lose each hour to suicide. Finally, organize a "month" of friends, family and colleagues to support your efforts – in person or on social media – with donations.

Movember encourages connectivity. Take the time to check with your friends to catch up on life on a regular basis. Speak … MUCH … especially on the most difficult problems. Keep moving and know your numbers … those of us who are 50 and over should talk to a doctor about a prostate cancer test (45 years old and up if you are ancestry) African or Caribbean or if you have a father or brother with prostate cancer). Finally, take a pair … no … literally … come down and give yourself an idea from time to time to see what is normal, then discuss with the doctor if suddenly something is wrong.

Now, let's start with that mustache … or that beard! Put this razor on for a few days. See how things develop, especially if it's been a long time since you've lost your hair in the face (the last week of college, at that time, you went through the TA, the Clinton administration).

Easy tips for growing a mustache

  1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Without it, itching can become unbearable when you develop your "fly or beard".
  2. Get help. Discuss with your hairdresser the type of mustache or beard that could complement the shape of your face and the texture of your beard.
  3. Keep it clean. Use a razor or trimmers to keep control of your work. It is obvious that you pay attention to your ways of Movember and that you are not just lazy.
  4. Buy things. Once the style begins to develop, do not skimp on adding new products to your grooming regime. Remember: the skin and hair of the face are different from those of the top of the head. Use beard cleansers and conditioners to keep things clean and soft.
  5. Beard oil is your friend. Apply beard oil, starting with the skin, from the root to the ends, to smooth out split ends, manage runaways, and keep your skin soft and supple.
