All of the northbound lanes of Interstate 880 on 23rd Avenue in Oakland were closed early Saturday as a result of a road accident causing the collapse of steel beams on the property. 39, Highway, said the California Highway Patrol.
A motorist traveling north on the highway at a speed of up to 100 mph lost control around 3:40 pm and struck beams supporting 85-foot-long steel beams at the construction site of the overpass. 23rd Avenue, said PSC officer Matthew Hamer.
Three of the beams collapsed on the highway, blocking the northbound lanes. The southbound lanes remained open.
At 19:15, Caltrans arrived at the scene with heavy equipment to start lifting the beams from the alleyways, Hamer said.
The driver – identified by the CHP only as a 28-year-old man from Hayward – was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-fatal. She was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, Hamer said.
No one else was hurt.
Traffic heading north was diverted from the highway to surface, and there was no time for reopening, Hamer said.
