OAKLAND, Calif. – The Minnesota Timberwolves rose from a high emotional level after attending Derrick Rose's epic performance on Wednesday night to a series of consecutive wins in their 116-99 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Friday.
In the visitors' locker room at the Oracle Arena, the atmosphere was up to what could be expected from a team that had just been beaten. Conversations were kept to a minimum and most players took a quick shower before getting on the bus.
Veteran striker Taj Gibson was sitting in front of his booth with ice packs wrapped around both knees and staring in a vacuum without moving an inch for about five minutes.
The room had a dark atmosphere.
But Jimmy Butler, the disgruntled team member of the team that is desperate to trade, is an unlikely source of positive energy. He lightened the mood by joking with Gibson, Tyus Jones and the training staff while smiling.
And when Butler left his locker to go to the shower, Andrew Wiggins – a teammate with whom he had problems not to use his immense talent – passed before leaving the locker room. Butler patted him on the right shoulder as he walked past him and said, "Good luck, boy.
Wiggins, who scored 22 points, brought back the action by slapping Butler on the back. "Do not pat my ass!" Butler shouted jokingly. "I tapped the shoulder."
It was a weird moment, but it's Jimmy. According to a spokesman for the team, he arrived at the arena in an Uber, which he does frequently.
In an exclusive interview with Yahoo Sports, Butler was adamant that he did not put himself on the stage and that he really liked being surrounded by his teammates even if he wanted to be traded.
"These are my guys," said Yahoo Sports quadruple All Star, after scoring 21 points and five assists. "Look, [my situation] not have [expletive] to do with me and everyone in this [expletive] cloakroom. I love them [expletive]. I will keep it one hundred with you. I love these guys. So when everyone says, "Oh, there's going to be a problem in the locker room." Yeah, agree. Does this sound like a problem in the locker room?
"I'm going to be the same guy at the end of the day. This is the crazy part. Nobody knows what's going on. You can only guess. You can not trust what someone says. But until you're here and you notice what's going on, you have no idea. I do not worry about anyone, man. My guys are my guys. "
It has been more than six weeks since Butler asked for a first exchange and many developments during this period could lead to questioning whether Butler has a negative influence on the young core of the Timberwolves composed of Karl-Anthony Towns (22) and Wiggins. (23).
But the quadruple All-Star challenges this perception.
"I do not give a [expletive] [what people think], Butler told Yahoo Sports. "I do not, I swear to you.Because I know where I am with my guys.I know how I am as a person. They can write what they want, they can say what they want and I can respond as I want, but in the end, I'm going to war with my boys, they're my guys, we're trying to win, nothing will come between us, I'm going to play the right way, do what I do and they know it, they know it.
On Wednesday before confronting Utah Jazz, reports revealed that Butler was considering taking an extended break to try to force the Timberwolves to move him. But this story was later debunked, butler explained that he was just sitting to recover from his injuries.
Although Butler may not have been directly responsible for this last mistake, it was another turn of events that his teammates had to endure.
It's only a matter of time before Butler is transferred, but in the meantime, he maintains that his situation is not a source of distraction for his teammates.
"No, because they know the truth," Butler told Yahoo Sports. "My team knows what's going on and understands everything. Even though it's basketball, it's a business and everyone knows it. I say to everyone, "Hey, if you're stung, sit down. If you can not go and give everything you have without worrying about getting hurt, sit down. Injuries occur, but you can prevent them if you are not right.
"This is for everyone in this league. You have to take care of yourself, because at the end of the day, every organization has the task of taking care of itself. You must pay attention to yourself. "
