Auburn won the top-20 Texas A & M 28-24 on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium to qualify for one game in three games. Quarterback Jarrett Stidham found Seth Williams in the end zone, 1:41 into the end of the game, erasing a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter and delighting Tiger fans. .
But do not be fooled by the temporary adrenaline injection, Auburn fans. This is only a temporary feeling facing a long term problem that starts and ends with coach Gus Malzahn.
Malzahn is supposed to be an offensive guru who uses a powerful attack to spread in spread formations that thrive with the tempo. Still, the Tigers (6-3, 3-3 SEC) only managed 19 rushing yards this afternoon against the Aggies. Certainly, Texas A & M (5-4, 3-3) has presented the best defense against the race of the SEC. But that is not supposed to matter to Malzahn – who has trained 15 players who have passed the 1,000-yard mark in 13 years as a university head or assistant coach.
