Texas vs West Virginia: No. 13 mountaineers surpass No. 17 Longhorns for decisive victory

They are just not more entertaining than that, is not it?

No. 13 West Virginia and No. 17 Texas did not play the cleanest game. The arbitration was, in a word, strict and both sides were naturally upset by the phone calls throughout the day. The final result was 21 penalties for 184 yards, most in West Virginia. Still, with eight head changes and 21 points in the last six minutes, you could not have asked for more Big 12 shots more fascinating than the Mountaineers won 42-41.

The culmination of this battle was the incredible 33-yard touchdown by quarterback Will Grier against Gary Jennings with 16 seconds to go, followed by Grier goalkeeper for a two-point conversion. The battle for the Big 12 Championship Game is just beginning, so here is what we learned from a long afternoon in Austin.

West Virginia has Grier, which means that she always has a chance: Grier has been excellent for a good part of the season, with the exception of a small hollow in October. Grier rebounded well and finished Saturday with 346 passing yards and three touchdowns. When West Virginia absolutely needed to play, he went there. Before his magic touchdown, however, Grier orchestrated an 11-yard, 75-yard mark in the fourth quarter to tie at 34-34. It was a decisive moment for the Mountaineers, who were starting to be tired in defense against the exhausting Texas racing game. Grier scored three out of five passes at 28 yards.

Then, of course, with seven points less than 30 seconds late, Grier gave West Virginia the launch of his season.

This was followed by Grier's goalkeeper when converting to two points.

Grier is not a runner, but he can be when the situation requires him. More importantly, when he's confident, Grier is a hard-back quarterback to contain. It takes a lot of stones to make a throw like that and bigger ones to stay with Grier after Texas has called several time-outs for conversion to two points. But if you have a player who gives you a chance to win every game, you must follow him when the match is in play. Holgorsen did it.

Texas still has a lot of work to do defensively: First and foremost, Texas was almost halfway through his starting defense at the end of the game. The nose tackle, Chris Nelson, was decided at the time of the match with an ankle injury. Defensive end Breckyn Hager and cornerback Davante Davis left the game early due to injuries. One by one, it seemed, Texas lost players due to injury.

Nevertheless, it discourages what the Longhorns have done defensively in the last two weeks. After being beaten in all directions by Oklahoma State in Week 9, the Horns granted 232 yards to West Virginia at seven yards per minute. The Mountaineers were an average team that rushed Saturday (4.46 yards per race, nine touchdowns) and had a lot of offensive line problems. (In addition to the goal, Yodny Cajuste was kicked out of the game for pushing a Texas player.) Nevertheless, West Virginia ran the ball successfully with Martell Pettaway, who crossed the bar of the century, and Kennedy McKoy.

There are a lot of questions that Texas still has to answer to the defense, but being defeated by a team with a history of mediocre online play is a starting point.

Texas WR Lil 'Jordan Humphrey is a monster: There is not much to say about the nine Humphrey catches for 143 yards and one touchdown. The guy is a monster and has won ball jumping situations all day long. West Virginia could not cover it and even when it seemed like there had been a play time, Humphrey was still huge. There's just not much you can do about size and fitness, which is the case for Humphrey.

The Big 12 Championship Game is still fascinating: Regardless of what happens with Oklahoma and Texas Tech, the Big 12 Championship Game should be fun until November. As of now, the Mountaineers and Sooners are on a collision course for their regular end – of – season game, but things could become obscure by then. Texas and the state of Iowa are still in this situation and the Cyclones are winning against the Mountaineers. By the way, Texas and the state of Iowa will meet on November 17 during a weekend that mountain people will follow closely.
