Detroit – After weeks of low and stagnant wages, Detroit hotel workers reached an agreement Saturday with the Westin Book Cadillac, run by Marriott, officials said.
Housekeepers, waiters, cooks and doormen from the downtown hotel on Washington Boulevard, all members of Section 24 of Unite Here, are putting up their signs against what's going on. they called a "24 hours a day" strike.
Nia Winston, president of the hotel trade union, called the regulation for hotel hotel workers "historic progress" on issues affecting wages, health care , benefits and working conditions.
"What we have achieved will change the lives of workers and the hospitality industry here in Detroit," she said.
Winston said that they had been fighting for a better deal so that only one job would be "enough for Detroit City hospitality workers".
"We stood together," said Winston. "Whatever their background, race, age, or department, the workers refused to be divided and so came out victorious. We hope that similar progress can be made in the six cities still on strike, and the progress made by Marriott in Detroit shows that they are able to make reasonable progress. "
The strike, which began on October 7 at 5 am, took place after contracts between Locals 24 and Westin Book Cadillac expired on June 30. The 160 members of Local 24 Unite Here joined 8,500 Marriott workers who led strikes across the country at higher wages. On October 22, the 24-hour strike pushed the CityLab 2018 summit to move.
Local 24 did not reveal more details about the colony, but said it will do so after the other striking cities have reached their agreements.
The six cities must resume negotiations or seek dates to resume negotiations soon, officials said.
Marriott officials did not immediately respond to requests from The News on Saturday night.
