Chinese authorities said at least 15 people were killed and 44 wounded at a rally on a highway.

The accident occurred on Saturday night after the loss of control of a heavy truck that crashed into a queue of waiting vehicles at a tollbooth in northwestern Gansu province.

31 vehicles were involved in the horror of the crash and 10 of the 44 wounded were in serious condition, reported the China Daily.

The truck driver, who was slightly injured, told the police that the vehicle's brake was failing as he was going downhill.

He is currently under investigation and is being monitored by the police as officers attempt to confirm his complaint.

Police confirmed that the man had lost control of the truck during the 17 km descent and struck the long line of cars around 19:31, China.org reported.

Meanwhile, provincial authorities in Gansu have ordered the inspection of dangerous sections of expressways.

The images show debris and metal debris twisted on the road, while the toll station, which leads to Lanzhou, has been closed.

The truck would be owned by a logistics company located in Liaoning Province.

Last week, 15 people were killed after passing a bus on a high bridge leading to the Yangtze River, China, in Chongqing City, in the west of the country.

In the previous accident, an eight-second police surveillance video showed the driver and a passenger arguing and struggling in the moments before the bus suddenly entered the oncoming traffic.
