Officials said a stack on a highway involving at least 31 cars killed 15 people in northwest China's Gansu Province, leaving dramatic scenes of wrecked and burned wrecks.

The stacking took place on Saturday after the loss of control of a heavy truck that crashed into a queue of vehicles waiting at a toll booth on the Lanzhou-Haikou expressway, the China Daily reported on Sunday. .

Officials said another 44 people were injured when stacked at the toll station near Lanzhou, capital of Gansu.

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, the report says.

Last week, 13 people were killed as a result of a fight between a female passenger and a driver who caused the fall of a bus from a bridge leading to the mighty Yangtze River in the south West of China.

Fatal road accidents are common in China, where traffic rules are often flouted or not enforced.

Road traffic offenses were attributed to almost 90% of accidents resulting in death or injury that year.
